DIY Tips to Increase the Resale Value of Your Home

Selling your home can be a stressful process. From hiring a realtor to deciding how you're going to increase your bottom line, it's not easy. Adding some small renovations to your home can be a great way to increase its resale value. And it doesn't mean you have to break the bank.

Do-it-yourself (DIY) projects are a great way to make your home stand out to potential buyers. Below, we've listed some tips to follow when considering home renovation DIY projects.

Do a test run

When tackling a DIY project for your home, it's important to try it out first before committing. That way, you'll have a better idea if you're capable of completing the project. As HomeAdvisor recommends, "For instance, when installing tile, buy an old table at a thrift store, lay down some guides rods (wooden dowels do the trick) and practice laying it before installing it. Or when painting rooms, start with the smallest area first to see how the paint color looks and to gain some hands-on training before moving on to the kitchen or living room."

Think green

Depending on where you live, planting a few flowers and shrubs outside of your home will draw attention to your yard and draw in prospective buyers. When shopping for the perfect plants, keep in mind the region you live in and plants that won't require a lot of TLC. Choosing plants you don't have to constantly water or maintain will help you save money in the long run and increase the resale value of your home.

Get the right tools

Behind any great DIY home remodeling project are the right tools. Spend a little bit more money on a good quality nylon brush or a brand-name roller for a painting job. Getting the right tools up front will save you time and money in the future and prevent you from having to redo your work due to poor-quality tools. If you want to do a DIY project that requires costly tools, consider renting them from a local store to save some money.

Set a budget

If you have multiple DIY projects to check off your to-do list, create a budget for each project. That way you don't blow all of your home improvement money on the first project and have to settle for poor materials or tools later on. Know where you can cut back and save. For example, instead of installing new tile flooring, consider vinyl flooring that mimics hardwood. Or, instead of buying brand-new cabinets, just replace the cabinet doors.

Utilize paint

Paint is one item that's affordable and can completely change the way a room looks. Adding two lines of trim to the chair rail and crown molding are easy projects for a stellar two-toned wall that will catch the eyes of all your guests. To find a paint color you love that potential buyers of your home will also adore, look at magazines to see what's currently trending.

Discover inspiration on your own

Hiring an interior designer to remodel the interior of your home can come at a hefty price tag, so why not consider a home makeover with a reputable staging company instead. They will utilize your existing furnishings and help you see them in a whole new light. You can bring your own inspiration to the table too. Look through some magazines, peruse Pinterest, or browse through some Instagram accounts for some styles that you can add in your living room or kitchen. By working with the pieces you have, and perhaps splurging on a new piece or two, you can breathe life into your home and still stay under budget.

There are tons of interior and exterior DIY projects you can tackle that will increase your home's resale value without breaking the bank. Picking renovations that will appeal to a wide range of personalities will help ensure that you get as many offers as possible on your home.
